Forget rapid. This new compact hatchback is much better quality and more equipped.
The Czech Republic carmaker Skoda continues its progress within Volkswagen. The new model, Scala, which has recently been shown by the company with teaser (tip) images and which has frequently been raised, has finally been officially introduced. Skoda chose a special event in Tel Aviv, Israel rather than an auto show to introduce this compact hatchback called Scala, which replaces the rapid model.
With a 4.362 mm length, 1.793 mm width and 1.471 mm height, the Scala is taller, wider and higher than Rapid Spaceback. 2.649 mm axle distance is also slightly more than Rapid Spaceback. This is reflected in the vehicle as a better interior space, with the impact of switching to the MQB A1 platform. In addition, the 415-litre luggage volume in Rapid Spaceback has increased to 467 litres due to all these changes. When the seats are folded, a volume of 1.410 litres is added, which is again increased by 30 litres.
Aside from its dimensions and practicality, it seems much more elegant than Rapid Spaceback, where Scala is replaced. But in order to compete with many successful compact hatchback like Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, Seat Leon, Opel Astra and Hyundai i30, it had to have an impressive design. At the same time, Skoda says that Scala is a pioneer in the design of the company’s future models.
We can also see that the design of Scala is similar to the vision RS Concept, which Skoda has shown for a long time. Of course, since the vision RS Concept has an exaggerated design, the similarities with Scala are limited. Perhaps a fast hatchback model in the form of SCADA Rs may be more similar to the vision RS Concept. However, according to statements from Skoda, the company has not yet included such a model in the plan list.
Speaking about Skoda Scala’s mechanical features, we can start by saying that all of the engine and gearbox options are from the Volkswagen Group. Base versions of the vehicle will come with a 3-cylinder 1.0 TSI engine. The power of this engine will be 95 horsepower and can be obtained with 5-speed manual transmission. However, the 1.0 TSI engine’s 115 horsepower version can be obtained with 6 advanced manual, if desired with 7 advanced DSG transmission. We also see this engine on models such as VW Golf, the new Seat Ibiza and Seat Leon Ecomotive. In particular, the new Seat Ibiza’s sporting equipment, Fr, shows that this engine is sufficient for compact cars.
In the New Scala, users who think of a larger-volume engine will be able to choose the new 1.5 TSI engine. This 150-horsepower engine has been replaced by a successful 1.4 TSI engine for years. If this engine is taken in Scala, the gearbox options are 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG. The vehicle’s latest engine option 1.6 TDI unit comes with 115 horsepower and can also be obtained with 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG transmission. It also explains the future of the 90 horsepower 1.0 G-TEC engine by the end of 2019. We have already seen an example of Skoda’s G-TEC engine. As you can remember, this engine could also use compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel in addition to gasoline.
When we get to the inner space of Scala, we can see major changes according to Rapid, where it took place. The cabin is now made up of more quality materials and offers more technology. The car features an optional 10.25-inch digital display panel and a 9.2-inch touch-screen entertainment display. This information entertainment system, so called over-the-air can receive remote updates. The front and rear headlights can also be selected as fully led. In addition, when the rear headlights are selected with LED, dynamic signals are also available. In addition, an option called Sport Chassis Control is available for customers who want to make their Scala sporty. With this system, when the sport mode is activated, the car is lowered by 15 mm and suspensions become a bit stiffer and a better road is achieved.
If you are wondering where the name Scala comes from, we can say that this word means digits in Latin. This is a detail that indicates that the vehicle has made significant progress compared to the old Rapid model. Finally, the Skoda scale will be available in Europe in the first half of 2019.
